Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that includes a range of symptoms, including difficulties with social interaction, limited interests and repetitive behaviors. The severity of symptoms can vary from person to person.

Causes/Description:

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a broad range of neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotypical behavior patterns. The exact causes of ASD are not fully understood, but both genetic and environmental factors play a role. Some factors may include genetic mutations, environmental toxins, and early childhood brain damage.

The causes of ASD are diverse and include genetic and environmental factors. A family history, mutations in certain genes, and prenatal exposure to environmental toxins or infections can increase the risk of ASD.

The inclusion of different autism subtypes in the DSM-IV occurred in 1994. In 2013, the DSM-5 was introduced, which established the concept of the autism spectrum. Ongoing research focuses on genetic, neurological and environmental factors that contribute to the development of ASD.
