Now you'll learn in detail and in a clear way what Dynamic Flex Casting is, how this method works, who it's suitable for, and how we use it at ApexaQLA Suisse. We'll also look at how it differs from the more well-known Serial Casting , the advantages of Dynamic Flex Casting, how it's integrated into our holistic therapy concept—and how you, as a parent, can actively participate.
What is Dynamic Flex Casting?
Dynamic Flex Casting is a gentle, functional casting method primarily used in pediatric physical therapy. Its goal is to improve gait, muscle activity, and posture—particularly in children with neurological or muscular abnormalities. Unlike traditional serial casting, which aims at passive muscle stretching, the focus here is on active, functional movement correction.
The cast is applied in a corrected position of the foot, but remains semi-rigid and lightweight—so your child can continue to stand, walk, and actively exercise instead of being immobilized. This supports natural movement and helps them learn and consolidate new movement patterns.
How does it work?
To begin, our specialized team will assess the mobility and alignment of the affected joint. Then, your child's foot will be gently adjusted to a functionally optimal position. This is precisely what makes this special: The primary goal is not to achieve maximum stretching, but rather to ensure the foot is correctly aligned.
A light, semi-rigid cast is then applied—consisting of a fiberglass bandage, soft padding, and special foam for pressure relief. This cast typically stays in place for two to three weeks. This allows your child to remain largely active in everyday life, which contributes significantly to its effectiveness.
A major advantage of ApexaQLA: The cast is applied not only by physiotherapists but also in close collaboration with experienced orthopedic technicians. This ensures that the alignment of the foot is truly anatomically correct—a decisive difference in quality.
Who is Dynamic Flex Casting suitable for?
Dynamic Flex Casting is particularly suitable for children with:
✅ Tiptoe walking (idiopathic or neurological)
✅ Easy crouching
✅ Muscular imbalances without fixed contractures
✅ Mild cerebral palsy
✅ Posture and balance problems
This method is particularly suitable for improving movement without requiring complete immobilization . It is often used in intensive therapy to provide targeted stimulation for improved gait – either as a supplement or alternative to orthoses.
Dynamic Flex Casting vs. Serial Casting – the differences
feature | Dynamic Flex Casting | Serial Casting |
Goal | Functional correction & muscle activation | Gentle muscle stretching |
material | Semi-rigid, flexible plaster | Solid, stable plaster |
Exercise in everyday life | Possible (standing, walking, practicing) | Restricted |
Length of time | 1–3 weeks (usually one cast) | 3–6 weeks with 3–4 changes |
Application focus | Foot alignment, gait | Muscle shortening, spasticity |
Combination with therapy | Very easy to combine | Very easy to combine |
Both methods are effective—which one you use depends on your child's individual goals and needs. Sometimes a combination is even beneficial.
What does Dynamic Flex Casting bring?
✅ Better foot alignment: The correct position is maintained and can therefore be better “stored” in the nervous system.
✅ Active muscle work: The cast allows movement – this allows muscles such as foot lifters and flexors to be specifically trained.
✅ No muscle loss: Since movement is desired, muscles and function are maintained.
✅ Support of gait: Many children learn to control their gait more consciously through the cast.
✅ Gentle & suitable for everyday use: The plaster cast is light, comfortable and can be easily integrated into everyday life.
How is Dynamic Flex Casting used at ApexaQLA?
At ApexaQLA, Dynamic Flex Casting is part of a holistic therapy approach. It is individually planned, applied specifically, and integrated into the existing program. Dynamic Flex Casting is a particularly valuable tool within our intensive therapy programs based on the Sensophysio concept.
Typical process:
Analysis & Consulting
Plaster cast with orthopedic technology
2–3 weeks of active training with Cast
Decrease & transition to further therapy
Family-centered approach
A central component of our work at ApexaQLA is the family-centered approach . This means that you, as a parent, are actively involved in the process. We show you exactly what to pay attention to and how you can support your child—and you become part of the therapy's success.
We provide parents with targeted, simple exercises to do at home that help to reinforce the effect of the cast and ensure its long-term success.
How much does a Dynamic Flex Casting cost?
The cost per cast is approximately CHF 450 to 550 per limb and session . This includes:
Orthopedic examination
Material & Cast
Plaster application by therapist & orthopedic technician
Accompanying advice & aftercare
Typically, four appointments are included: initial consultation, two therapy sessions and a final appointment with plaster removal.
The costs may vary slightly depending on the individual – we value transparency and clarify everything with you in advance.
When does Dynamic Flex Casting make sense?
If your child has limitations in gait or posture, but no fixed contracture or structural misalignment, Dynamic Flex Casting can be a valuable support. Especially when combined with intensive exercise therapy and with the opportunity for active participation, it is a gentle and effective method.
